I love Scott Jarvie’s story. His tale of following photography down an unknown road into a lifelong passion for taking pictures is encouraging and inspiring. Check out Scott Jarvie’s story here.
One of my favorite things about Scott is his willingness to pour into other photographers. His site lists a great set of photographers who’ve interned or been taught by Scott. From Scott’s bio:

I taught myself over the course of several years.
I put in crazy amounts of time and learned from countless trial and error how to take good pictures.
I enjoyed figuring out the technical side and I constantly judged people’s reactions to my pictures to understand what good pictures were.

I think the crazy amount of time I put into photography (as a single college student who was in a perfect position to invest said time)
it’s a primary motivating factor why I’m so compelled and willing to teach and share with others.
Because though I know that if they want it bad enough they’ll learn it all in time.
But why not be a help. Speed up that process a little. Take all that tons of time i had invested into learning from scratch and recap it all in a few phrases or a day of help.

The death and resurrection of Jesus is a miracle that we at the Vineyard celebrate all year long. Easter, however, is a special occasion to really praise Him for what he’s done and share it with others on an even greater level. God has blessed us with some amazing ways to share the story of Jesus’ sacrifice to others, and this year is no exception. This year was in the form of a play titled simply, Easter Play 2012. Written by Brandon Freeman, the play takes a little different look at the impact Jesus had on the two criminals that were crucified with Him, on Barabbas, and on the Roman soldiers that dealt with Him.

I found the script very compelling. The point of view of Barabbas was one I hadn’t thought from very much. The play as a whole is fairly simple and straight to the point, just as the title. The point is that every person must decide if Jesus who He said that He is, and if He is, what does that mean to me. The final words were impacting and cut to the issue with some real power.

When it comes to photography sites built on WordPress, there really is one common thing that nearly all of them have. Photos. And while I recommend having a good title, both for attracting readers and for SEO reasons, sometimes it’s easier to recall what your post was about by seeing the featured image you used to represent the post.

So let’s imagine you’re looking back through your posts and want to edit something. You could just browse the site itself so you can see the images, find the post you want to edit, remember the title, go back to the post list in the admin interface and go through the pages of posts until you find that title. Wouldn’t it be easier if you could see the featured post image in the list of posts?

This adds a thumbnail display of each posts featured image.

Just copy this bit of PHP and put it in the bottom of your functions.php file in your theme.

// Setup Admin Thumbnail Size
if ( function_exists( 'add_theme_support' ) ) {
  add_image_size( 'admin-thumb', 100, 999999 ); // 100 pixels wide (and unlimited height)
	}

// Thumbnails to Admin Post View
add_filter('manage_posts_columns', 'posts_columns', 5);
add_action('manage_posts_custom_column', 'posts_custom_columns', 5, 2);

function posts_columns($defaults){
    $defaults['my_post_thumbs'] = __('Thumbs');
    return $defaults;
}

function posts_custom_columns($column_name, $id){
	if($column_name === 'my_post_thumbs'){
        echo the_post_thumbnail( 'admin-thumb' );
    }
}

Without any changes this should add a new column to your post list. If things seem to be getting a little crowded in your columns, you can hide some of the columns by de-selecting the ones you don’t need to see all the time on the drop-down menu labeled Screen Options.

This is a really simple trick, but one that goes a long way to making the post list interface feel much more useable. Let me know how yours turned out or if you’ve got any questions.

Jeremy Cowart is the man. Amazing with a camera, and a compassionate philanthropist. To hear of the extensive charity work he’s done, you’d wonder where he finds the time to make a living. Look at all of the things he’s started or been a part of such as Help-Portrait, Voices of Haiti, and even his Lifefinder Tour. Then look at his portfolio. He’s photographed some huge names and beautiful people. Definitely don’t stop at the pictures of the celebrities though. Some of his best work is with the people that are too often neglected. His work is truly beautiful and I’m certain that his talent is much a reflection of his honest caring for the people he photographs.

From his website’s about page…

At his core, Jeremy loves to make art. Starting out as a designer, Jeremy really only began taking pictures to bring texture into his design work. Before he knew it, he loved photography (and was getting paid to do it.). So in April of 2005, Jeremy switched over to it full time and he has never looked back. In a relatively short amount of time, Jeremy earned the respect of artists, photographers, and celebrities alike. Now hailed as one of the trailblazers in the industry, Jeremy sees taking a photograph as merely the first step in creating a piece of art.

But it’s not just about that. It’s about having a natural eye behind the camera. It’s about knowing the light, the location, the subject. It’s about treating each client like a friend. And that’s what Jeremy does best.

Photography has taken Jeremy to six continents. Jeremy’s skills behind the camera have allowed him to work with many clients in the entertainment industry, such as Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, Sting, Clive Owen, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Imogen Heap, Courtney Cox, and Ryan Seacrest, just to name a few. He also traveled with Britney Spears in 2009 as her photographer and documented seventeen countries with the Passion World Tour in 2008. From all his travels, Jeremy has released 3 Photography books, “Hope in the Dark”, “The Poor Will Be Glad” and “Awakening”.

I first learned of Zack Arias from his seminar on CreativeLive.com. The part that impacted me the most was his story of how he got started, and how much ingenuity he had in the marketing arena. He told of how he wanted to photograph bands, so he went to a meeting where bands would get together. In order to get his name out, he sponsored one of the meetings and bought beer, then he poured the beer and handed out business cards with every cup of beer, introducing himself and getting to know his new clients.

Things like that are brilliant, and they only scratch the surface of the creativity and passion that comes out of Zack. He’s fun to watch and his pictures are a pleasure to see. His list of clients is chocked full of big names.

From the bio on his website…
I am an editorial and commercial photographer based in Atlanta, GA. While I’ve been working in the music industry for the past seven years I’m now branching into more editorial work and advertising. You can boil it down to, “I photograph people in studio and on location.” My style and approach is simple, straightforward, bold, classic, true, and straight from camera.

My greatest talents are the ability to mix with any class of people and to get nervous subjects to relax in front of my camera. I can handle any technical difficulty you can throw at me. I once heard that a photographer’s job description is “problem solver”. I would have to agree with that.

I’m married to the lovely and talented musician Meghan Arias (formerly Meghan Coffee) and between us we have four boys ranging from age 12 to 2.

Facebook has been a player in the social arena for a while now. It has had its strengths and weaknesses, but has a serious user base. Google+ is a little newer on the block, but jumped in with some really great features, many of which really cater to the photographers. I really haven’t picked a horse in this race yet, but I definitely love seeing the competition. It pushes both sides to be inventive.

While it does seem like a response to some of the features that Google+ has presented, Facebook is finally getting in the game with some good things for the photographers. It seems like it’s about time, considering there are about 200 million photos uploaded to Facebook per day. The most recent and welcomed in my opinion, is the ability to see the photos in fullscreen mode. It also displays the images at a higher resolution.

According to Facebook, they’ve increased the size of the photos stored from 720 pixels to 2048 pixels on the largest edge, for an 8 times increase overall as of February 2011. So the maximum resolution will be 2048 on Facebook. Google has always hosted up to 2048 pixel images for free, and even larger up to 1 Gb worth, so they still have a slight advantage, but the technology continues to push ahead.

Photography often begins with some experimentation and then the joy of finding beauty in the images that emerge. At some point you’ve gotten to the point where the pictures you get are worth money to someone and you’re ready to make a go of “professional photography”. What happens if you don’t want to shoot weddings or crying children? There is a whole world of things to take pictures of and just as many people trying to sell something. Photography sell things, particularly in an internet driven world that often buys without ever seeing the product or seller with their own eyes. This is a great look at some of the many ways to use photos to sell things, and if you can sell things with your photos, your photos are worth something.

Chase Jarvis is one of the greats. You’ve probably already seen some of his work in magazine ads or commercials, his camera work is nothing short of creative genius. If you’re ever looking for a shot of creative inspiration, look to his extensive collection of Youtube videos. The other wonderful thing that Chase has brought us is CreativeLive.com. CreativeLive streams photography seminars of all sorts, free to view if you can catch it live, and at a reasonable rate if you’d like a copy after the fact. They’ve hosted a number of amazing photographers. Best of all, you’ll find Chase’s blog at www.chasejarvis.com/blog, and it’s built on WordPress.

From Chase’s Bio on his website:
Chase Jarvis is well known as a visionary photographer, director, and fine artist with a consistent ambition to break down the barriers between new- and traditional media, fine- and commercial art.

As a photographic master, Chase has won numerous awards from Prix de la Photographie de Paris, The Advertising Photographers of America, The International Photography Awards, and numerous photographic trade magazine throughout the world. Photo District News (PDN) Magazine called Chase one of the top 30 most influential photographers of the past decade.

Early in his career, Chase dabbled in filmmaking, directing and producing short films (winning recognition at select film festivals across the country), but this passion was resurrected in 2008 when Chase launched the world’s first HDdSLR for Nikon. As literally the first artist in the world with access to this technology, Chase was propelled into the limelight as a new “indie” directorial figurehead armed with these new cameras and others like it, as well as the creative chops that have helped defined a new era of filmmaking. As such, his career as a Director and Producer of commercials, short films and music videos has exploded in the last 2 years. Whether working on commercial or personal projects, the opportunity to work with some of the best brands of our time–Apple, Starbucks, Nike and others–with multi-platinum artists like Sarah Mclachlan and members of Pearl Jam–Chase has defined an aesthetic that’s all his own.

In the Fine Art world, Chase has begun work with curators, museums, and foundations, as well as galleries in the USA, Europe and Middle East in and around work in mobile photography, “instant” and “live” worlds of creativity, and the interrelation of accessible art and popular culture. His most recent installation at the Ace Hotel NYC during an artist in residency drew international acclaim, as well as attention of curators from MOMA and The Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC. In the lineage of Warhol, Basquiat, and Shepard Fairey, Jarvis has worked to elevate the nature of instant art, community collaboration and sharing of art while simultaneously democratizing its processes.

Chase is also the creator of 3 books. Seattle 100, Portrait of a City which is the culmination of a 3 year project photographing cultural leaders in Seattle and combining those images with an ethnography of the city he calls home. Another book launched in 2007 titled simply Stevens Pass–the first book of its kind celebrating a single ski area. And last year’s hit book–part of an ‘ecosystem’ combined with an online site and iPhone app–called The Best Camera Is The One That’s With You was released in the Fall 2009 to widespread media acclaim, and was featured on ABC, NBC, CBS, the Discover Channel, Fox, CBC Canada, as well as in The New York Times, Washington Post, LA Times and numerous other media channels in broadcast, print, and online. His iPhone app “Best Camera” completely re-shaped the photo app paradigm as the first app that allowed users to share images via social channels from within the interface of the app – a feature that is now considered requisite. Wired Magazine and Macworld both called Best Camera a “Top 20 app of the year” out of more than 300,000 apps online by, and was also highlighted by Apple CMO Phil Schiller in a New York Times feature article, calling it a “must have” app along with Facebook, ESPN, and CNN.

In addition to his creative pursuits, Chase has many interests. He is a widely sought after presenter and has been a Keynote speaker on 5 continents. His invites include those ranging from Fortune 500 companies, to top universities, to the prestigious TEDx conferences held worldwide. He is an “accidental” social media maven with millions of subscribers, fans, and followers. He is also an entrepreneur–having recently started one of the world’s fastest growing online education companies, creativeLIVE.com, in March 2010–and is a gifted leader, volunteer, husband and uncle.
