Christmas Advent Days 3 and 4

Luke 1:19 And the angel answered him, “I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I was sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news.  20 And behold, you will be silent and unable to speak until the day that these things take place, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their time.”

Just Keep Your Mouth Shut

Today the kids learned a little about faith and trust in God. We touched on the story of Zechariah. He was a priest. He’s basically locked alone in the temple to talk to God. An angel pops in out of nowhere and tells him his wife is gonna have a kid, despite her age and barrenness. Zechariah doesn’t say, “Dude! That’s awesome!” He says “We’re too old! Prove it!” So the angel pulled something out of the Matrix and shut Zechariah’s mouth and made him mute until his wife had the baby.

It occurs to me that God wanted to do something through Zechariah. He gave him a heads up and I’d bet that God wanted Zechariah to have a great time of excitement in watching as He used him and his family for amazing things. With a little doubt, maybe a lot of doubt, Zechariah gave up a bunch of time he could have spent talking with his wife and telling people about the great things that God had coming.

Anyway, the kids made faces to represent Zechariah with his mouth shut. The book that we’re using suggested using a bubble from some bubble-wrap we could then pop after John is born in the story. Since we didn’t have any bubble-wrap handy, we decided instead to just put a band-aid over his mouth. The kids loved putting the yarn on for hair.

Zechariah

The day 4 ornament was an angel representing Gabriel, partly for his role in Zechariah’s story and also for his part in appearing to Mary in Luke 1:26. This craft relied a bit more on Becky and I but turned out very nice looking on the tree. Becky and I did have a question about Gabriel though. We wonder how such a warrior and mighty messenger of God feels about being portrayed in dress and glitter and all the pretty little things. What do you think?
